What’s New?
Herky Huffman/Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area
Thanks to the suggestion of a fellow birder, a small group of us took a day to walk the scenic trails winding through wildflowers, pines, and swampland at the Herky Huffman/Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area. We saw monarch butterflies, golden silk spiders, pine warblers, red-shouldered hawks, and even a wild orange tree, just to name a few! I highly recommend visiting the area for the chance to immerse yourself in Florida’s wild beauty. Check out the FWC page on planning your visit to look at maps and calendar dates, as hunting is permitted on certain days.
I came back with many photos to inspire me, including one of this perfectly perched alligator. Like a cat draped across the arm of a couch, the alligator lay regally on a fallen log, leaves picturesquely scattered across its back and the surrounding still water.
View more photos from the walk in my online photo gallery under recent images. Also check out the wood burning I created based on the alligator scene. I took a bamboo revolving tray and burned a depiction of my original image on the surface. This piece of functional art is available for purchase in my online store (update: SOLD).

Garden Magic
New Plants!
I’m sure you’re wondering about the title of this newsletter: Jaboticaba. Also known as a Brazilian grape tree, it is a popular fruit tree amongst permaculture gardeners in warm climates. Although ours won’t fruit for a few years, here is a photo from A Natural Farm, located in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, where we purchased our young tree in November. I can’t wait to try the fruit from our tree one day!
We also purchased an Australian finger lime tree from A Natural Farm. Here is a guide from Epic Gardening covering tons of information about the fruit, also known as citrus caviar for the tiny capsules of juice it produces.
Even more importantly, we also added several native plants to the garden, because we humans aren’t the only creatures that depend on the land. I’ll be sharing a post about all the native plants in our yard in the near future, so stay tuned!
Final Thoughts
I am grateful to you all, and hope you have taken away some new interesting information from my newsletters. This holiday season, think about planting some native flowers or a tree in your own yard, and give back to the land and wildlife we often take from so recklessly. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy Winter Solstice everyone!
