Looking back at 2022
A textual and graphical summary of our harvests throughout the year
Early this year, Tyler and I had the idea to start recording the weights of everything we harvested. Unfortunately, we didn’t think of this until March 27, so the data doesn’t account for about three months worth. Nor does it account for garden snacks (leaves or one-off berries munched while strolling around the garden looking at plants). Nonetheless, the graph below depicts a great success! We harvested a total of 28 pounds of food! Nearly half of that was papaya, with peppers, tomatoes, and kale also making up significant portions of that.
2022 was technically our fourth year of planting and growing. However, I think in 2019 we mostly planted ornamentals and a couple mango saplings, and 2020 was pretty minimal in its tangible successes. So really, we’ve only put in significant effort for about two years. I know one day we’ll look back, and 28 pounds won’t seem like much. We’ll have pounds and pounds of bananas, mangos, papayas, lychees, jackfruit, black sapote, coconuts, cocoplums, figs, Barbados cherry, limes, tangerines, lemons, blueberries, strawberries, and even more annual vegetable crops.
But for now, looking back at how exponential the growth of the last four years has been, I’m quite proud of our harvests. And I expect 2023 will bring us much much more.
